Birthing Kit Foundation Australia Celebrates 3 Millionth Kit Milestone at Government House

Adelaide, 12 September 2025 – The Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (BKFA) will celebrate the assembly of its 3 millionth Clean Birth Kit at a reception hosted by Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, and Mr Rod Bunten at Government House.

Since its beginnings in South Australia in 1999, BKFA has grown into a global movement, providing simple, low-cost birth kits to women giving birth in under-resourced and humanitarian settings. Each kit contains the six essential items needed for a clean and safe birth: a plastic sheet, gloves, soap, cord ties, a sterile blade, and gauze.

Over the past 12 months alone, BKFA has:

  • Distributed 129,860 kits across 11 countries,
  • Partnered with 27 local organisations to strengthen in-country health initiatives,
  • Mobilised 15,030 volunteers in Australia and internationally,
  • Supported 259,720 mothers and newborns with essential resources and services, and
  • Held 303 Assembly Days across Australia.

The 3 millionth kit will be formally assembled on 13 September by the Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills — the same group who produced the very first kit in 1996, marking a powerful full-circle moment in the organisation’s journey.

BKFA continues to expand its work through corporate volunteering programs, in-country kit production, and sponsorship of midwife training in developing countries, ensuring its impact reaches even further in the years ahead.

Her Excellency, in her role as Governor and patron of more than 120 South Australian organisations, joined the celebration, acknowledging the foundation’s work in saving lives and empowering women worldwide.
