Akello Sarah feeds her baby after birthing using a Birthing Kit at Ngariam Health Centre

Teso Women Peace Activists (TEWPA) is a rural women’s organisation  based in Uganda which addresses the challenges of unrest as a result of armed conflicts in Teso. TEWPA distributes BKFA birthing kits to the 6 Health Centres of the Katakwi District. These communities face some challenging problems, including high rates of pregnancy in mothers aged 16-25, high rates of infant and maternal mortality, lack of available and affordable drugs, poor medical support pre and post-natal, and remote living, often depriving women the opportunity of reaching a medical facility.

Much needed and greatly welcomed Birthing Kits were distributed in November 2016. In addition to the arrival of the kits, messages of advocacy were shared, around the importance of good hygiene in pregnant women, the use of the kit, family planning, and the involvement and role of the husband.

TEWPA 32000 birthing kits were received and distributed and 649 mothers subsequently then received Birthing kits in 6 health centres of Katakwi district. Many of the mothers have since given birth using the birthing kits including the woman pictured here.
