Democratic Republic of Congo
BKFA supported community development projects in DR Congo from 2010–2016 with Mission in Health Care and Development (MHCD) in Sud Kivu and Green Ark Committee in Kinshasa district. Funded projects have included traditional birth attendant training, the training of trainers, in-country kit production, and a monitoring and evaluation project.
From 2014–2017 BKFA supported two local Indian NGOs—Centre for Social Action Women’s Education and Development (SAWED) Trust and Society for Women’s Education and Awareness Development (SWEAD)—to implement community development projects to improve maternal and reproductive health outcomes amongst Dalit and other marginalised tribal groups in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The projects included the training of local birth attendants, the training of trainers, and awareness raising activities around healthy maternal and reproductive practices to promote care-seeking behaviours within target communities.
In 2015-16 BKFA supported a pilot project in Kwara State Nigeria with Sweet Mother International (SMI) that focused on improving the skills and capacity of traditional birth attendants in rural areas.
